Euklid

Aude sapere!
Dare to think!

The Lodge EUKLID was founded by seven Master Masons in the Orient of Vienna; its light was solemnly kindled on 28 September 2005. On 21 December 2005, during the Winter Solstice Festival, it was received as a member lodge into the Grand Orient of Austria.

EUKLID works according to the form of the Schröder ritual customary within the Grand Orient of Austria. In keeping with our motto, rooted in the tradition of the Enlightenment — which we render more freely as

„guided by reason, we strive for progress on the foundation of knowledge“

we work in a laic manner, using a book of blank pages as our ‘Book of the Law’ and refraining from invoking the Grand Architect of the Universe during our work.

For the same reason, we also adhere to the passage from the Old Charges of 1723: ‘But although in ancient times Masons were obliged in every country to be of the religion of that country or nation, it is now considered more advisable to oblige them only to that religion in which all men agree, leaving each his own particular opinions; that is to say, they should be good and true men, men of honour and integrity, whatever differing sects or beliefs may otherwise distinguish them.’

In other words: religion and personal belief are each individual’s own domain; they do not affect membership in the Masonic Order or the work of the lodge. We consciously interpret the ‘religion in which all men agree’ as ‘humanity and tolerance’ — and therefore the path into Lodge EUKLID is also open to atheists.

Furthermore, we are convinced that it is no longer appropriate to exclude half of humanity from Masonic work, and therefore we admit seekers of all genders as Brothers and Sisters.
